Taking Root
The seed of a dream took root in 1979 when we graduated from Kirkwood Community College with degrees in horticulture. We wanted to share our knowledge and love of gardening and landscaping with others.
We started our business, originally called Horticulture Specialties, Inc., in 1985 with a truck, a used wheelbarrow and a commitment to make the business a success.
Growing and Thriving
From Day One, we attracted customers with our personal service and work integrity. In 1988 we moved to an acreage at the corner of Blairs Ferry Road and Palo Marsh Road in Palo, where we still reside. It’s great to live and work surrounded by growing things—the plants, flowers, trees and shrubs that help us connect with nature and enhance our lives.
In 1996 we renamed our business Cedar River Garden Center to reflect our decision to open a retail center. In addition to the complete landscaping services we’ve offered from the beginning, we added greenhouses with annuals and perennials and a nursery offering a variety of trees and shrubs. Today we have 10 greenhouses, an expanded nursery and extensive landscape materials, beckoning customers to explore the possibilities.
